Tech Tip - China Lanterns by Framelines TV via Vimeo Video School

Good lighting doesn’t have to cost a lot of money or be overly complicated. You can use inexpensive items just laying around the house to improve how your scene and subjects are lit. Anything from a floor-lamp, a reading light, or a paper lantern!

This Week in Vimeo! July 26th

This weeks extraordinary user is Eddie O’KEEFE, a member since December 2007. Eddie seems to have stumbled out of a different decade, describing himself as the kinda’ guy who “digs chicks, patty melts and rock n roll music.” He’s responsible for some amazing short films and music videos, all with a unique “rustic” style. His profile claims, “He makes movies about delinquent teenagers behaving badly,” but he manages more than just that. Eddie’s work captures the energy and emotional complexity of youth, and with such style.

Check out his latest music video The CHANCES - No Escape and while you’re at it, watch our personal favorite, The GHOSTS.

Weekend Project - Cropped Creations

Among my favorite aspects of editing a video is having complete control over what a viewer will and will not see. For instance, if I were shooting video during a vacation, by omitting certain shots and including others I am able to weave the narrative exactly to my liking. I can leave all my shots of thunderstorm riddled days on the cutting room floor and use only those of fun in the sun with lots of laughs to create an up beat, joyous final product. With this concept of focusing in on specific parts of footage in mind, we’d like to present this week’s Weekend Project: Cropped Creations!

With this project, we would like you guys and gals to shoot some footage and during the editing process, really take into consideration what exactly you wish to emphasize, by cropping out the unimportant and leaving only the aspects of the shots that drive your narrative (Not sure how to crop your video? Head over to Creative Cow for tutelage).

In A76 PRODUCTIONS’ wonderful video, La Prochaine Fois (The Next Time) cropped shots are set alone to focus the viewer, as well as coupled with others to introduce other specific points that are important to the story. (For more examples, head over to the post in the Vimeo Staff Blog!)

Your videos can be entirely fictional, non-fictional or even a mix. The only thing your video must include to be eligible for this week’s weekend project is that your footage must be cropped!

A few things:

  • All videos must be shot and edited specifically for this weekend project.
  • Try to keep your video under 3 minutes and make sure to submit your video to the Weekend Project Group.

All submissions are due on Tuesday, August 30th at 11:59 PM (EST).

The winner of this contest will get a free Plus account, or if you’re already a Plus member, we’re going to let you gift the Plus to whomever you choose (along with an extra 2.5 GB of upload space)! The runner-up will receive an extra 1 GB of upload capacity whether Plus or not.

Have fun, and we really look forward to what you guys put together!
